History of DiOrio’s Pizza & Pub on Baxter
The building was originally built in the early 1900s as a single screen theatre. Over they years, it was formerly called the Highland Amusement Co., The Gem, and Shibboleth Hall. In the 1960s, it became the 919 Baxter Gym, where Muhammad Ali is rumored to have visited and boxed.
DiOrio’s Pizza and Pub opened its’ first location in St. Matthews in 2010. Their mission is to be a exceptional culinary establishment with a menu inspired by simple and honest cooking. DiOrio’s sources the finest ingredients available. They pride themselves on making fresh dough daily, homemade mozzarella, and cutting vegetables fresh to order. The lasagna is a homemade recipe from “The Old Country” in Pietrabbondante, Italy, where the DiOrio Family is from.
They’ve since expanded to two more locations, including this one on Baxter Ave, serving as a testament to high quality pizza, pasta, and more!
Reasons to Visit
DiOrio’s has a wide variety of food to offer: delicious wings, 12-inch hoagies, and calzones, and of course pizza. The large variety of hand-tossed pizza includes the “The Massive Gibbon”, a significantly massive 30″ pizza weighing up to 15 pounds which can normally feed 10-15 people. If you can finish it with just 4 people in 40 minutes or less, then it is completely free.
DiOrio’s on Baxter is an amazing venue with a full bar and large party rooms available for any event. They offer several different flavored Margaritas (Peach, Strawberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, and Watermelon). Each day of the week features a different rotating cocktail special, from $2 Tito Tuesdays to $4 Bloody Mary’s on Sunday. They have recently expanded into late night events, such as karaoke on select nights, as well as DJ events on Fridays and Saturdays. Now open until 2 AM on the weekend!
