History of Seidenfaden’s
The 1890 building was originally built as an A&P corner grocery, until 1921 when it was purchased by Charles Seidenfaden. They survived Prohibition by rebranding as the “Seidenfaden Soft Drink Co”, while bootlegging liquor and beer out the back door. It remained in operation by his family for 3 generations, and eventually became a neighborhood institution. Over the years, they’ve hosted many Derby Day parties, a grocery business, and early morning Pinochle card games.
The Seidenfaden’s sold the bar in 2002 to father and son, Danny and Jimmy Heck, who ran the bar until 2012. At that point, one of their regulars, Alex Cosby, leased the business from them. Alex operated the bar and developed Seidenfaden’s reputation as the premier DJ dance bar in the city from 2012 until his unfortunate passing in 2021. It was at this point that the Heck family decided to reopen, and it is currently managed by siblings Jimmy and Emily.
Reasons to Visit
Seidenfaden’s holds a variety of events, bringing together an eclectic group that all consider the bar among the best in the city. Weekly events run the gamut: a double movie is featured on Sundays; the “Ridenfaden” Cycling group meets on Wednesdays, and Karaoke is performed all night long on Thursdays. On the weekends, they bring in a diverse group of either original live music acts or DJ artists. Occasionally they host salsa dancing events, with authentic Latin American cuisine and dance teachers who will help you learn. During the summer, food trucks are invited for the Ridenfaden cycling meets, where everyone is welcome. Seidenfaden’s also features a dedicated viewing of Jeopardy, every day, from 7:30 to 8:00 PM.
